Chapter 10

“Pack up your stuff, I’ve got a family for you.”

This caseworker of mine breaks the news as if it doesn’t mean anything. This is an important moment because I count on the emotion it brings to help me remember everything that follows the announcement. If it doesn’t mean anything to him, I guess I shouldn’t expect him to consider what it represents for me.

Danielle, and the Educators, would have handled it the right way and this part of my childhood, the one that involves the B family, would have left a more detailed impression on me. No doubt that if Danielle had been here, she would have recognized there was a distinct possibility that, with the B family, I could have been close to reaching my destination.

But Danielle isn’t here now. It’s the cold and wet handed one who is.

It’s sad that this part of my childhood is not all that clear because, even if my memories of the B’s are all over the place, what I get from them is that I’m now at a point in my life where I’m starting to open my heart and my mind a little. It’s unfair that I remember the blunt announcement by my social worker more vividly than my actual arrival in the B family.

The B's are the parents of two grown up daughters and a son. They also have a young teenage daughter, N, who of course still lives with them. They heard about me through Linda, one of the Educators at the orphanage. She is also a member of the B’s extended family, and they decided to give me a chance.

Everybody in Happy Town loves Linda because she smiles all the time and no matter how good the mood already is in the building, the place gets a little brighter when she arrives. Linda, as well as Carole and Denise, are like big sisters to us: highly protective sisters who care very much about their little brothers and little sisters. With her help in pushing fate a little, Linda has gone from being an Educator, to being a big sister in my heart, to being an actual member of my family. One has to have been an orphan for some time to be able to appreciate this progression to its just value.

So I settle in with the B family and adapt to their lives like kids can sometimes do so easily. I feel quite comfortable with Mrs. B right from the start. It’s summer and there is no school to go to, so N and I spend our days with her while Mr. B goes to work at one of the local paper mills.

Every night, Mrs. B tucks me in and asks me what kind of a kiss I want before I go to sleep. I always ask for a "movie kiss" which is a long kiss with my lips tightly pressed against hers, just like I’ve seen in a movie once. She kindly obliges and laughs at
